Holiday Hair Guide

Thanksgiving is days away! Happy Turkey Day or I guess Ham Day or Veggie Day depending on what your eating.

Thanksgiving is a time for tons of family, lots of cooking, last minute grocery store runs, and afterwards crazy holiday shopping and decorating the tree. There’s normally a lot going on, and while you probably want to look cute, there isn’t always much time to get ready in between cooking and sharing your bathroom with half of your extended family.

Don’t worry, I have got you covered! I’ve complied several looks to get you photo ready for this Thanksgiving! I have also added a bunch of links for product, tools, and accessories to help you out. I have no affiliation to any of these brands. I have been a hair stylist for the last 7 years and have worked with all of these brands and I think they do a great job. Message me for any questions on substitutions. I’d love to help!

STYLE # 1: Stylish hat.

WHO IT’S FOR: Almost any length.

TIME LENGTH: No time.

DIFFICULTLY: Easy!

Got zero time to fix your hair? Problem solved! Hats are super in style right now. Especially those with a brimmed edge and in natural earth tone like this one. You can find them all over! The best part about a hat, is not only is it super adorable, fall-ish, and in style, but its great for a super quick look or greasy roots. Make sure to tilt the hat back a little bit like she has it to show off your eyes. Wow, that was easy!

STYLE # 2: High half pony.

WHO’S IT FOR: Medium to long hair.

TIME LENGTH: 5 minutes with out curling your hair.

DIFFICULTLY: Easy/Medium.

For this jazzed up half pony, start off with straight or curled hair. Then pull your hair into a high half pony. Soften the look by using your fingers to pull pieces on the top of your head to add a little bit of volume. Don’t worry about making it perfect, imperfections add to the softness of the look. To polish the look off, lift the half pony up and take a small section of hair at the bottom of the pony tail and wrap it around to cover your pony tail holder. Secure it in place, underneath the pony, with a few bobby pins. Finish the look by spraying a firmer hair spray, like R+Co’s Vicious, directly on the wrapped hair to keep from having fly aways. Also spray where you bobby pinned the end of the hair to keep it from slipping throughout the day. For fine hair or thin hair line, start off by building volume with in the hair line and side of head with a powder based product. I love Oribe’s Swept Up. If you have light brown to blonde hair, you can also get away with using baby powder. For darker hair, look for clear, aerosol dry shampoo to add some volume.

STYLE # 3: Bobby pin decor.

WHO IT’S FOR: Any length.

TIME LENGTH: 1 – 3 minutes.

DIFFICULTLY: Easy!

Bobby pins are no longer just for pinning up updo’s or holding back short layers that pop out. Bobby pins now come in really cute colors and designs and you can also stick them in your hair to create cute designs. Use your creativity with this one! I love the arrow look like this girl has. You could also create a triangle with three bobby pins or just use one or two pins side by side with a really cute pattern like these or these.

STYLE # 4: Big hair + tight curls.

WHO’S IT FOR: Medium length (below the chin to bottom of bra straps).

TIME LENGTH: 30 – 45 min but it can last a couple of days.

DIFFICULTLY: Medium (arm work out included).

I love this style although this is a bit more time consuming and an arm work out. Well, that could be useful after all that pie. You’re welcome! However, with enough product, you could rock this style for several days with only needing to touch it up or pull it back into a messy, curly bun. Starting off with good quality products will help this style to hold for a couple of days. In towel dried hair, apply a good root lift like Bumble and Bumble’s Thickening Spray to your roots from your ears and above. Then apply volumizing mousse all over like Orbie’s Hair Plumping Mousse. Blow dry your hair like normal. Next, heat up a small wand or curl stick. I personally have this one and it works great. You will be taking tiny sections to curl your hair. Start off at the bottom and clip the rest of your hair up. Then grab a small section (we are talking about 1.5 – 2 inch square sections), and wrap the hair all the way around the wand. For this style, you can alternated the curls going backwards or forward which will create a naturally curly look. Continue to do all sections, spraying the sections with working hair spray before and after. I love Bumble and Bumbles working hair spray because it’s also a heat protectant. Finish the look with a final good coat of hair spray! Well, hello there, fierce lioness!

STYLE # 5: Soft waves.

WHO IT’S FOR: Short to medium hair

TIME LENGTH: 10 – 20 min.

DIFFICULTLY: Easy to Medium.

This is one of the easiest and quicker styles for shorter hair especially when you don’t want to get out a round brush and do a fancy blow dry. Start off sectioning the hair right above your ears and clip the hair up to get it out of the way. For this look, I like to use a regular curling iron that is about 3/4″ to 1″ in size like this one. Take a section on either the left or right side on your first section and clamp the hair with the curling iron about 1-2 inches above the ends of the hair. You should have the curling iron in an up and down position with the handle closer to your shoulder and the clamp pointing to the ceiling. The clamp should be closer to the mirror and the barrel closer to your shoulder. Now your ready! After you clamp the hair, twist the curling iron back about two to three times depending on how long your hair is. You should be about 2 -3 inches away from your scalp. Hold the curling iron in your hair for a few moments until it gets hot. I check the temperature by carefully and QUICKLY touching the wrapped hair around the iron. If the hair still feels room temp, hold your finger LIGHTLY on the hair until it starts getting warm (YOU SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHING THE IRON). Now press light down on the clamp handle to open the clamp. In one simultaneous motion pull the curling iron out of the hair by pulling the curling iron down towards the floor verses out. You should have some bend in your hair with a straight tail on the end and straight hair at the root. Don’t worry if it looks a little weird right now. Continue curling the rest of the hair making sure to turn the curling iron AWAY from your face. For most people, I do about three big sections horizontally. One sectioned at the top of the ear and one at the temples, and then what ever is left. For the bottom I do 4 sub sections. You get the idea on the section sizes. Don’t over think it! Make sure you do the top section laying down at its normal part. Once you are done curling run your fingers through it to loosen it up.

STYLE 6: Clipped back.

WHO IT’S FOR: Almost any length.

TIME LENGTH: 1 – 3 minutes with out curling it.

DIFFICULTLY: Easy!

This look is super simple but by adding fancy is accessories, this look gets a little more glam. For this look, you just need a pretty clip. I love this triangle gold barrette that I found. For this style, you can leave your hair straight or curl it, how ever you’re feeling. It also is great for second day, curled hair because normally the curls around your face get funky the second day. That problem is solved with this style because you are pulling the funky pieces away from your face. There is so many variations on this style. You can leave your part or have no part. You can also tease the crown before you clip it for more volume or leave the barrette really loose and pull a few pieces out around your face to make it really soft. So pull back as much or little hair as you want and pop that cute clip in!

STYLE 7: Sleek middle part.

WHO IT’S FOR: Almost any length + straight to soft wavy hair.

TIME LENGTH: 30 min.

DIFFICULTLY: Easy – Medium.

Straight hair with a middle part is classic and stunning. Start of with clean damp hair and apply a smoothing cream like Bumble and Bumble Straight Blow Dry or Aveda’s Smooth Serum. Then blow dry your hair using a paddle brush to help smooth it out. Next, flat iron your hair in sections to make it board straight. Finish this style off with a small amount of oil on your ends. Use what ever tiny bit is left on your hands and lightly dab the front pieces and your part line to kill any fly aways. Make sure to keep the hair tucked behind your ears and shoulder to show off your sparkly necklace or earrings and make it extra edgy!

Until next time beauties!

Happy Thanksfiving!
