Just Peachy?
Not always, right? That is pretty fitting for everything I have been seeing on social media the past couple of days. Everyone is talking about stress or how stressed they are. I was talking to my friend the other day and we were talking about her worries of being a small business owner, the possible tax changes, and how those changes could affect her, her finances and her business.
If we are honest, life today can have us worrying a lot and for many different reasons.
But even besides the past couple of days during the election and this weird 2020 year, we will always have things in life that are far from peachy. Stressful work, crazy family life, job changes, looking for a new job, moving, deciding if you should move, making big purchases that you had not planned for, bad health issues, getting sick, death, kids that make you want to pull your hair out, even a bad haircut.
Life is never easy, never perfect, and sometimes it can honestly feel like its crashing down on you. Whether you are going through the dark valley or just a little hiccup I hope this word encourages you today.
A Man Who Had to Run for His Life:
Over the past few days, I have been reading about David in 1 Samuel. In this portion, he is running from King Saul, not because he did anything wrong but because Saul wanted to kill and harm him. David was actually invited to work for Saul years prior and over time Saul grew angry and jealous of David and what God was doing through him. His anger grew so much that he knew he needed to flee. Talk about a bad situation for David, something that was completely out of his control.
At one point in the story, David had been hiding from Saul in the wilderness for a while. I can’t imagine David’s heart and mind while he was hiding out from Saul on the run for his life. I would have felt so hurt, betrayed, alone, scared, and very stressed. Sleep would have been non existent. While David was hiding out, a close friend, Jonathan who actually happened to be Saul’s son, came to David. Although Jonathan was Saul’s son, he did not agree with his father’s jealousy and anger towards David. In fact, David and Jonathan had a deep friendship and Jonathan had a strong loyalty to David. The Word says that Jonathan came to encourage David in his faith in God and not to be afraid, even in his far from peachy circumstances.
There are actually several Psalm written during this portion of David’s life including 56, 57, 59, and 142.
I wrote out a few verses from those chapters to encourage you and to share what David was thinking. I am so grateful for a window into David’s thoughts as he trusted the Lord in a tough season of his life.
Although I am sharing some pieces from Psalm below, I encourage you to read the Psalm in whole and the story of Saul and David in 1 Samuel.
Conversations With God When Things Aren’t Just Peachy:
I cry out loud to the Lord… Although my spirit is weak within me, you know my way
When I am afraid I will trust in you. In God, whose words I praise, in God I trust; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
This I know, God is for me.
I seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes.
God be exalted above the heavens; let your glory be over the whole earth.
A Humble Heart Seeking the Lord:
From the verses above, you can absolutely tell David was worried about his life and the situation he was in but he cried out to God and set God on the forefront of his mind. You can tell by his words in Psalm that knew who was his protector and security- God and because of that he had nothing to fear.
In times of stress, uncertainty, pain, things beyond our control, and situation hardly just peachy- we can know in confidence that we have a Father who loves us, wants what is best for us, will guide and protect us, and wants to give us peace and joy that is not depended on our current circumstances. That peace and joy comes from God who gives us our salvation and life. We know that no matter what happens here on earth, if we keep our focus on God, we will endure.
So let’s encourage each other to set our minds on God and who he is, what he has done in the past, his faithfulness, and his utmost control in the world. It is inevitable that we will have less than peachy situations that occur in life but we can also be encouraged by the character of God and what he has done.
John 16:33 says just that:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
Hope this blesses you today. 💕
